Wednesday, December 12, 2012

Onamia (12-11-12)

The Dragons opened up at home with a loss to Onamia High School 76-55.  Turnovers and inconsistent defense/rebounding plagued Pine City throughout the game.  Adams lead the Dragons with 14 points, Pavelka had 13, and Hansmann and Brytowski each had 10; Ripka and Blake each had 5 rebounds.
The Dragons will travel to rival Rush City on Thursday.  We would love to see our fan base travel with us!

@ Isle (12-7)

The Dragons opened their conference season with a win last Friday at Isle with a final score of 52-51.  Noah Adams hit a game winning 3 with 2 seconds left, he finished with 12.  Mitchell Hansmann finished with 26 and broke a school record (presumably) with 8 made 3 pointers in the game.  Devon Ripka had 9 rebounds in his first varsity game.

JV/Varsity Scheduling Explanation

The 2012-2013 Boys Basketball calendar has been released and there have been a few questions that we feel need to be addressed.

In regards to Wednesday and Saturday morning practices, we have reserved the gym to ensure that we have space to use.  Our plan right now is to use these times to get into the weight room and lift.  We will NOT be having 5 hour practices.  We want to get our student athletes in and out to ensure that they are able to enjoy their weekends and rest.  We will be having a youth camp on Saturday mornings as well, but this will be on a volunteer basis.

Monday, November 5, 2012

Preseason Meeting

We will be having our annual preseason boys basketball meeting this upcoming Thursday, November  8th in Coach Allen's room (125).  Please plan on attending either before or after school. This is for all boys grades 7-12 planning on playing basketball this year.

Youth Camp Review

For two weeks, the Pine City Boys Basketball Program in conjunction with the Pine City Hoops Program just finished a two week camp involving Pine City student-athletes in grades K-6 at a boys basketball camp. There were approximately 90 athletes taking place at the camp run by Varsity Head Coach Kyle Allen and members of the boys basketball program. The players worked on fundamental skills ranging from dribbling, shooting, passing, footwork, and defense. All participants were able to walk out of camp the last day with a dragon green and white basketball so they can continue to work on their fundamental skills on their own. It was a great time and experience for the entire program. A big thank you goes out to all who helped make this camp possible.

What - A tournament/showcasing of amazing talent and competition from years past and present
Where - Pine City High School

Rules of Competition/Entry

1.  Cost is $5 to be a part of the tournament and is to be paid prior to playing.  Show up at the door and pay to play.
2.  Teams will only be allowed 2 non alumni participants to avoid the “Ringer” situation, and to make it more competitive for all alumni teams.  The main purpose of the tournament is to gather with old teammates and have a good time playing competitive basketball.
3.  It is not required to have a team to come and play.  We can put you with a team that has small numbers or you can request to be on a team.
4.   Inappropriate language, disrespectful comments towards anyone, and other forms of unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated and will result in the player being exited from the building.  This is up to the discretion of the current PCHS coaching staff.
5.  Tournament games will be played on an honor system basis and honesty and integrity are much appreciated.  All general rules apply and defense calls fouls.
6.  School doors will open at 8:30 a.m. in order to allow time for warming up and setting up the teams and tournament.  Please be there around this time.
7.  Tournament will be pool play (If we have 6 teams or more) with a playoff type bracket for the top 2 teams in each pool.  For example #1A plays #2B and #1B plays #2A.  Pool play games will be two 10 minute running time halves with stop time the last minute of the second half.  Playoff games will be two 15 minute halves with stop time the last 2 minutes of each half.

We would like to invite ALL alumni from any year to come join us for the Pine City Basketball alumni tournament on November 24, 2012.  This has been a great tradition at Pine City High School for several years, and we appreciate all of the alumni who continue to support the PCHS basketball program through this tradition.

Half Way: Summer Basketball Update

We have had a good group of boys coming in and working hard this off-season so far, but our numbers could always be better!  We are keeping track of hours per student and by grade.
A normal open gym will usually include the following:
  • Warm Up/Stretch/Lift
  • Perfect Shooting
  • 2 Ball Dribbling
  • Shooting On The Gun (See Below)
  • Games

Unfortunently, I have no idea how to turn this picture, but this is a (sideways) view of one of our two new shooting machines.  Along with the Girls Basketball Program and our Youth Hoops Program, the Boys Program was able to secure funds for two shooting machines for our programs.  The machines will be used year round by most of our athletes from approximately 5th grade up.  We are getting many more quality shots taken in a smaller time frame.  We are already beginning to see the improvement in our summer league games in our shooting ability!

Open Gym/Summer League

We had a great turnout for Day 1 of Open Gym.  We hope that our numbers continue to stay high throughout the off-season so that our program can take the necessary steps forward.

We also had a good turnout for our 1st night of Summer League.  The vast improvement from last year to this year was evident in the boys play and understanding of the game.

@ Esko (3-7-12) Playoffs

Pine City Varsity will travel to Esko on Wednesday for our first playoff game.  The bus will leave at 445PM for the game from the High School.
Any C or JV players that would like to come with may ride the bus with the Varsity.  They will, however, have to pay for their entrance to the game.

Esko @ Home (3-2-12)

Pine City lost its final regular season game of the year to Esko at home.  Luckily, Pine City will have a chance to control its fate as we will travel to Esko for the first playoff game this year on Wednesday.

Tuesday, February 28, 2012

Parents Night/Senior Night

Friday will be our last home game and regular season game of the year.  We will take time before the Varsity game to recognize our seniors and our Varsity parents.  Please plan on attending and joining us in this moment.

Aitkin @ Home (2-24-12)

In a well played game and tough contest, the Pine City Boys Varsity team fell to Aitkin High School at home on Friday.  This was a good game that was played well by both teams.  A few minor mistakes either way could have tilted the contest.
The Boys will wrap up their regular season finale on Friday, March 2nd with Esko High School at home.

Thursday, February 23, 2012

Foley @ Home (2-20-12)

The Dragons picked up a big win on Monday over visiting Foley High School.  Pine City played well most of the game, limiting their negative stretches.  A few defensive stops at the end were enough to seal the victory for the Dragons.  We hope to continue this win streak on Friday against visiting Aitkin High School in a conference match-up.

@ Moose Lake-Willow River (2-18-12)

The Pine City Boys Basketball Team was out-muscled at Moose Lake-Willow River on Saturday, but played hard and were competitive for most of the game.  The lack of legs became a big problem for the Dragons in the second half as they were playing their second game in under 24 hours.  We hope to bounce back on Monday against visiting Foley High School.

@ H-F (2-17-12)

In a hard fought battle, the Pine City Varsity Boys Basketball team fell to conference rival H-F on their senior night.  Foul trouble was a problem for Pine City as a final rally came up just short.
The C team had a thrilling 2OT loss on the night, coming up just short to the H-F C team.

We were also lucky enough to have one of our "Super Fans" join us on the bench for our game.  He was celebrating his 18th birthday and served as a extra manager on the bench for us!  Thank you for your help!

Youth Camp

This year the Boys Basketball Team held a Youth Basketball Camp every Saturday morning from 8-10 AM for six weeks.  It was free to all campers that came and was a very successful time.  The young players were able to work on their basketball skills, win prizes, work with our current Varsity and JV players, and even had a chance to be a ball boy for the Varsity team.  We look forward to having more opportunities like this in the future!

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

@ Siren (WI) (2-14-12)

The C team and JV joined forces together on Tuesday night to defeat the Siren (WI) JV squad.  The boys played well and within themselves and the C team players did not back down from the older competition.
The Varsity found themselves out-matched by the undefeated Siren Dragons and were unable to keep pace with them.  Our Dragons played hard through the game and continued to fight through the battle.  We come closer to home on Friday as we travel to H-F.

Monday, February 13, 2012

@ Braham (2-9-12)

The C team came out of the gates slow but were able to right the ship, winning by one in a very close and competitive game.
The JV stayed with Braham in the first half but after losing some players to the Varsity squad, were unable to close the gap in the second half.
The Varsity squad was out-matched from the beginning of the game, but continued to fight and stayed relentless throughout the contest.  Braham's dedication to their off season and the fundamentals were evident throughout the game and will serve as a reminder as we begin our off season in due time.

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

@ Rush City (2-6-12)

Both the JV and the C team were able to come out of Rush City with wins last night.  The JV looked very decisive in their victory while the C team was able to pull a nail-bitter off in overtime.
The Varsity came our very sluggish and was unable to bounce back in the second half like we had done against East Central.  In the second half, Rush City out played, out hustled, and out worked our Varsity squad.  Slow starts and lack of consistency continue to plague the Varsity team.  We look to bounce back on Thursday at Braham.

Boys Hoops Results

4th grade boys----3-0-- 1st place in Pine City Tournament

5th grade boys---2-1--  2nd place in Siren Tournament

Another nice weekend for boys basketball!

East Central @ Home (1-3-12)

The Varsity team was able to put together their first winning streak of the season with a one point victory over the visiting East Central High School.  A lack-luster first half was put behind them as the team came out in the second half and fought back to take the lead.  The Dragons will visit Rush City in a very important seeding game on Monday.

Wednesday, February 1, 2012

Mora @ Home (1-31-12)

All three teams played well against Mora on Tuesday night.  The C team fell at the buzzer by two, and the JV team competed and played well against Mora just falling short.
The Varsity was able to come out of Tuesday night with their 3rd win of the season and first at home.  The was one of the first "complete" games for the Dragons, who played well on both end of the court.  Five Dragons scored in double figures and their poise and passion were evident.
Up next for Pine City will be East Central at home on Friday.

Boys Basketball HOOPS Results

6th Grade-- 3-0  win the Ogilvie Tournament

5th Grade--3-0  win the Siren Tournament

7th Grade--2-2  take 4th place in the Pine City Tournament

A combined 8-2 record.  A very positive day for the boys program.

Isle @ Home (1-26-12)

In a game where Pine City found themselves in the game for the entire contest, the Varsity squad fell just short of Isle 65-55.  A few mishaps on defense were the difference between and win and a loss tonight for the Dragons.  We host Mora at home on Tuesday.

Wednesday, January 25, 2012

@ Ogilvie (1-24-12)

The Pine City Boys Basketball Varsity Team was able to come out of Ogilvie with a 2 point victory on a buzzer beating three pointer.  The Dragons played well for most of the game after coming out flat at the beginning of the game.  We will host Isle at home on Thursday.

Thursday, January 19, 2012

Meal (1-19-12)

Reminder we have a meal planned for after practice today in the 7th Grade Commons (6PM).  We hope to see you there!

Onamia @ Home (1-20-12)

We start our second half of our conference season on Friday with Onamia coming to town.  Our last battle with Onamia was the first game of the year with a run at the end coming up just short.  We hope to have a great showing on Friday!

UPDATE:  It was another tough loss for the Varsity on Friday night.  The boys played hard and well but we got into foul trouble early and had were inconsistent from the field.  We are getting good, clean looks at the rim; now we have to capitalize.

Wednesday, January 18, 2012

Thank You!

A BIG thank you goes to a few specific supporters of our team who bought replacement Non-Stick boards for the games.  After the purchase of a new camera, practice jerseys, and warm ups, there was little money left in the budget.  These supporters were able to buy and donate these to the team.  Thank you so much for your help!

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

Hinckley-Finlayson @ Home

Hinckley-Finlayson comes to town tonight in a conference match up.  We hope to come out with lots of intensity and enthusiasm.  Please come and support your Pine City Boys' Basketball teams and help us in our goals!

UPDATE:  The JV team was able to come away victorious last night against their counterpart.  The team played hard and it was evident.  The C team battled hard but were unable to seal it at the end.
The Varsity was competitive throughout the whole game and came very close to playing a complete game. However, we were beaten badly on the offensive boards and gave up way too many second chance points.  Free-throws also played a pivotal role in the game and we were unable to reward ourselves when we did reach the charity stripe.  The conference season starts over on Friday as the Dragons welcome Onamia to PCHS.  We hope to see you there!

Boys Hoops Teams Results

Good news over the weekend for boys basketball-

6th Grade--   4-0  1st place in their tourney

5th Grade-- 3-0  1st place in their tourney

4th Grade--2-1  2nd place in their tourney

A combined 9-1 is a good day for the program.

@ Aikin

In some tough match ups, the Pine City C, JV, and Varsity teams were unable to come away from the long trip to Aikin with wins.  The physicality and discipline of the Aikin teams proved to be too much.  Poor shooting hurt the Varsity team, who were unable to break their cold streak of shooting in the game.  The teams will look to bounce back against H-F next Tuesday at home!

Thursday, January 12, 2012

Barnum @ Home

Tonight will be another great test in a non-conference match-up.  The coaching staff has been preaching Heart, Pride, and Hustle to the players, we hope to see all three on display tonight!

Tuesday, January 10, 2012

Braham @ Home

Tonight we host Braham at Pine City High School.  Players, please be back at the school by 515 for pre-game shoot-around.

UPDATE:  Last night the C team came within 3 and the JV came within 10 of beating their competition.  Both teams played extremely hard and are doing a great job of executing what is asked of them.  Their heart and effort were on display for everyone to see.  The Varsity found themselves in a one-sided battle for most of the game.  However, the last 7-8 minutes showed the capability and desire that the coaching staff has been preaching.  Finding a way to play in that fashion for a whole game is a continued search that this program is looking for.  We will have another chance against Barnum on Thursday.  We hope to see you there!

Monday, January 9, 2012

January 9th-Meal

Reminder that we have EARLY practice tonight followed by a MEAL in the 7th grade commons.

UPDATE:  We had a nice turnout for the meal last night and a wonderful overabundance of food.  More parents and families are beginning to show for our meals.  It is our goal to make this a family affair and have players and their families attend the meals.

Youth Camp

Starting this Saturday (January 7th) we will have camp for our Pine City youth at NO COST.  From 8-9AM at the Elementary Gym we will have grades K-2 and grades 3-6 from 9-10AM.  The coaching staff, JV, and Varsity players will be there to help our youth with their basic basketball skills.  These mini-camps will be happening for the next six Saturdays until our last day on February 11.  The chance for prizes will be available to campers!

Rush City @ Home

On Thursday all three teams came up short to Rush City.  The C team lost by two and the JV lost by 6.  The Varsity had a tough time scoring in the first half and dug themselves a hole they were unable to claw out of in the second half.  Flashes of brilliance were shown at times and the teams will be working on consistently showing those flashes for longer periods.

Milaca @ Home

All three teams (C, JV, and V) played very hard at home in our first returning game at home in some time.  Unfortunately the Varsity came up short by just 3 points.  Pine City will have two weeks of home games with Rush City, Braham, and Barnum coming to town.

Parent/Player Meeting (JV/V)

We will be having a short meeting directly after practice on Monday, January 2nd at 7PM at the High School Gym.  Please plan on attending this meeting.

Holiday Tournament (@ Webster (WI))

Both the JV and the Varsity teams competed in a holiday tournament in Webster, WI.  Both teams played very hard and were very resilient to the sometimes hostile environment.  The JV was able to come away 1-1 in the tournament, losing to Grantsburg (WI) and beating Webster (WI).  The Varsity came out of the tournament 0-2, losing to both Grantsburg and Webster.  Both were very hard fought games and were steps in the right direction for our inexperienced team.
