Boys bitten by Bombers, bark back at Huskies

Pine City 68, Isle 30
Getting back on track against an overmatched opponent, the Dragons enjoyed their Senior/Parents Night on Friday, Jan. 27. In the game flow, it
was clear that his junior teammates were focused on getting senior Austin Hansmann some good looks in this game. Hansmann responded with his best outing of the season and a team-high 18 points in the win. Fellow senior Adam Seals also got the start but fell into foul trouble early. Seals had a solid game and finished with four points and four rebounds.
Nick Hansmann was second on the team in scoring with 14 points followed by Logan with 10.
The Dragons had another game scheduled against a highly beatable opponent on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at Onamia before they host Hinckley-Finlayson today, Thursday, Feb. 2. The Jaguars are currently undefeated in the Great River Conference and beat the Dragons by 11 in the first meeting of the season.

Boys bitten by Bombers, bark back at Huskies

Braham 72, Pine City 58
After stopping Braham’s historic home winning streak with a 71-48 win back in December, the Dragons had to know the Bombers would look for revenge here. Pine City seemed a bit surprised by the Bombers’ intensity early and fell behind 32-24 at the break. The Dragons didn’t shoot well in the contest, primarily because Braham guarded the three point line hard and forced contested shots. After going 20-48 against Rush City beyond the arc one game prior, Pine City managed just 7-37 against Braham’s tough perimeter defense.
“Very physical game, very fun game; Braham is Braham,” said Dragons head coach Kyle Allen. “We had a battle with them at their place and we were in another battle on Tuesday night. Neither team took each other lightly. They came out and played aggressive from the tip to the end and we turned it on a little too late. One anomaly is that we just didn’t shoot as well as we are accustomed to. We understand with our style of play we can’t always shoot as well as we want to. I thought we got great looks. It just didn’t fall.”
Pine City let the Bombers build a 16 point lead in the second half before attempting a run and cutting the lead to single digits. Braham answered with some big plays by junior Josh Zimpel, who played at a high level all night.
Nick Hansmann led the Dragons with 15 points and five rebounds. Clay Logan had foul trouble limit him to just two points in the first half but finished with 14. Jake Rademacher had nine points and five rebounds.

1/19/17: @Rush City

Boys dominate East Central and Rush City

  •

  • Pine City 80, Rush City 51
After falling to the Tigers in both meetings last year, the Dragons were focused on getting a win over a rival on this night. That focus showed, especially during the first half when the Dragons drained repeated three-pointers. Pine City finished with 20 made baskets from outside the arc in the contest. The Dragons led 48-25 at the half only to see a Rush City run cut the lead to 11 in the early portion of the second half before the Dragons ultimately closed the door.
“We really shot the ball well in the first half,” said Allen. “We made 13 of 26 from downtown in that half and got exactly what we wanted. We were able to execute and the shots we took fell at a high rate. Jake Lunceford had a great game and really did a good job on Tyler Oscarson, who is a heck of a ball player. Overall, I was really proud that the boys came in so focused.”
Freshman Seth Logan was Pine City’s top scorer of the night with 16 points including a key three-pointer to slow the Tigers run. Clay Logan had 15 points on five made threes. In addition to Lunceford’s stellar defense, he turned 5-6 shooting into 13 points while also posting a team-high seven rebounds. Rademacher had another very good game with 12 points.
The Dragons have upcoming games against Braham and Isle in the next week and will hope to keep adding wins to their current 8-1 record in the Great River Conference.
