12/28/19: @Cloquet

Dragon basketball takes 4 more

Pine City 72, Cloquet 37
What a difference 24 hours can make. Pine City came out Dec. 28 with great energy, passion, and focus to defeat Cloquet, 72 – 37, less than 24 hours after being defeated by Proctor. The Dragons were taking charges all night on the defensive end, fighting for rebounds on both ends, and sharing the ball on the offensive end. It was like poetry in motion, at times, as Pine City continued to work throughout the game, stick to the game plan, and keep their heads through adversity.
“A lot of teams would have sulked after the loss the night before, but our leaders pulled our group up and addressed it. We stayed overnight, as this was a tournament in Cloquet, and we were able to talk in small groups and as a big group. I am proud of the way our leaders responded to the game the night before,” said coach Allen. “ I am proud of how our group focused on the little things and the important things to have more success the next night. It was a good win for our program, the first time we have beat Cloquet since I have been the head coach in Pine City.“Facebook

Boys basketball: Cloquet, Wood City sees mixed results

CLOQUET — When Kory Deadrick was hired as the new Proctor boys basketball coach in June, the Esko native knew he wanted to join a holiday tournament.
One quick call with his good friend Kyle Allen in Pine City and it didn’t take long for the Dragons’ coach to sell the 23-year-old Deadrick on joining Cloquet’s annual Wood City Classic.
“It’s the best tournament in the state,” Allen said. “We love that we’re a part of it. Put us down in pen.”
“He said ‘You got to get in,’” Deadrick said. “He got me in.”
Deadrick, who also played in the event for Esko in 2010 and 2011, joined the fun last weekend, watching his Rails upend Allen’s Dragons 55-46 on Friday, Dec. 27, and a day later, get edged by Cromwell-Wright 60-57 in a shot-for-shot overtime thriller.
The competition was so tight that for the second straight season, all four boys’ squads split results, as Pine City also clubbed Cloquet 72-37 in the event’s nightcap Saturday, Dec. 28, yet the host Lumberjacks carded a 69-57 win over Cromwell-Wright a day earlier.
“We’ll be back next year,” Deadrick said. “Count us in.”
The Cardinals and Rails were nip-and-tuck all Saturday afternoon, as when Cromwell-Wright would grab a slight lead, Proctor would pounce right back, and so on.
It was Micah Pocernich-led Cardinals who prevailed, as the senior scoring-machine took over in the extra frame. While classmate Gage Zoeller (22 points) paced the way in regulation, Pocernich (21 points) produced in bonus time, scoring several crowd-rousing baskets of great difficulty. The veteran duo are the only two back from last year’s state tournament squad.
Cardinals coach Bill Pocernich — Micah’s father — said he brings his team 20 miles eastbound on state Highway 210 each winter because of the close proximity and upscale in opponents for his Class A state-ranked crew.
Saturday’s overtime victory was the first for Cromwell-Wright (6-1) in their three years in the field.
“Any win in this tournament is good,” said Pocernich, now in his 24th season. “To be able to play this caliber of competition really helps us out later in the season. For us, it’s a deposit for March.”
It was Cloquet (2-7) who marched by the Cardinals on Friday, led by Adam Schneider (22) and Markus Pokornowski’s (20) 42-point effort. Mix Schneider’s silky jump shot with Pokornowski’s powerful presence in the paint, and the pair of 6-footers, are the Lumberjacks’ bell cows. When they’re clicking, it's as talented a tandem a ticket can buy.
“They’re really fun to watch,” Cloquet coach Steve Battaglia said. “A lot of what they do, you can’t coach. You put them in a position to be successful and watch them do their thing.”
Schneider added 17 points against Class AA state-ranked Pine City on Saturday, but it wasn’t nearly enough to tame the Dragons, who were breathing fire all night — connecting on 12 3-pointers from seven players.
“That’s what they do,” Battaglia said. “They get up and down the floor, put pressure on you, shoot a ton of threes and they made a ton of threes tonight. I don’t know if us being good would have mattered, because they were really good. They whaled on us.”
Led by their boisterous coach in Allen, the energy from the Pine City sideline is unmistakable and unrelentless. In turn, comes a chaotic brand of basketball that’s hard to duplicate.
“We really try to do it all from the top guy to the last guy,” Allen said.
The Lumberjacks are staying optimistic with still plenty of season in front of them, knowing they don’t want relevancy at the New Year, but rather two months from now.
“With the number of multisport athletes we have, we’re going to have to grind it out and round ourselves out come March,” Battaglia said. “That’s really all I care about. Three games in March.”

Pine City 46, Proctor 55
When you don’t execute your game plan, you are very vulnerable. That was the case as Pine City faced Proctor Dec. 27.
“Hats off to Proctor, they had a great game plan, they executed it well, and their kids did not back down,” said coach Allen. “I thought our energy was low and our focus was off; it led to a lot of good scoring opportunities for them.”
Proctor did a great job of getting to the end and completely beat the Dragons at the free throw line. Proctor went 26-28 and Pine City was 2-4 on the night. It was a hard fight for the Dragons, allowing too many turnovers, not enough rebounds, and not enough defensive stops to win this game.
“It is disappointing, but I think there is a lot to learn from tonight’s game and a lot that will motivate us and push us to be better,” said coach Allen. “We will need to use the sting of this loss to help spring us forward into the rest of our season.”

12/21/19: Two Harbors (@Target Center)

Dragon basketball takes 4 more

Pine City 88, Two Harbors 59
Two Harbors came out gritty, really hard-nosed and tough as they hit the floor against the Dragons at the Target Center Dec. 21. Pine City kind of took a shot to the gut to start the game, being out-played during the first half; however, in the second half the Dragons were able to calm down, focus on the correct things, and the Dragon seniors did a nice job taking control of the game and leading Pine City to the win, 88 – 59.
Tanner Wicktor did a great job in his efforts on the boards and came down with a team high nine rebounds. As a team, Pine City did a good job on the boards, getting more than 40 total rebounds.
The Dragons struggled with ball control and committed way too many turnovers. Seth Logan led Pine City offensively with 17 points. Koleman Lind scored 13, and Caleb Fromm also scored in double figures with 11 points.
“We ended up shooting a decent percentage from 3 in the game, which is a good sign for playing on a bigger court with a different backdrop. That has been an issue in the past. All 13 players got to play in the game with 11 of them scoring in the game,” said coach Allen. “The Target Center... I am grateful that we can provide this experience to our players every other year, but the amount of work that goes into it is crazy! It is good for our boys to also play on a bigger floor, something we will see in the playoffs and beyond hopefully.”

12/21/19: Snow Angels

On Saturday, members of the Pine City boys basketball program teamed up with Jeremiah Mohr and The Snow Angels Foundation to help deliver gifts, baskets, and holiday cheer to individuals, families, and deserving members of the Pine City community!  In all, The Snow Angels Foundation was able to connect with almost 30 homes in the Pine City community.

Makwa Joining a New Thunder of Dragons

Christian Fromm, a senior in the Pine City basketball program, has announced his verbal commitment to play football for D-II Minnesota State University: Moorhead starting in the fall of 2020.

"Christian is a great example of what hard work can get you" said head basketball coach Kyle Allen. "He has really worked on his craft and his athleticism over the years.  He is a product of our Unified Athletic Program that we put into place several years ago.  We can give the players all the opportunities in the world, but they have to make the decision to take advantage of them; Christian has done that and he is now reaping the benefits of all that work".

Fromm has played football, baseball, basketball, and ran track during his career at Pine City High School.  His dedication to the weight room, off-season workouts, and in-season sports should not go unnoticed.  "Big Makwa" has earned the spot to play collegiate athletics through his work ethic and ability to grow as an athlete.  "He will absolutely bring the values he has learned with us to the next level with him" said Allen.

12/17/19: @North Branch

Dragon basketball takes 4 more

Pine City 81, North Branch 71
To have to play two 3A schools back to back, and defeating them, is a huge feat for any 2A school. North Branch is running some similar sets to Pine City, getting pace up as much as they can and shooting a lot of three-pointers. The Dragons showed their strength on the court, defeating North Branch 81-71 on Dec. 17.
In the second half, Pine City looked to Seth Logan and let him showcase his skill-set some. After a sluggish first half, he really came alive and did a lot of positives plays on both ends of the court, and ended the night with 28 points. Caleb Fromm came out and played another great game, in back-to-back contests, on both ends of the court. He is learning to adapt his game and is understanding his strengths within the Dragons system. Fromm ended the night with 17 points. Koleman Lind also ended the night offensively in double figures with 11 points.
“I was really proud of the grit and determination our group showed in this game coming off of the win against Chisago Lakes. This was another battle until the end, and to do that in the fashion we did showed what this team is capable of,” said coach Allen.

12/16/19: Chisago Lakes

Dragon basketball takes 4 more

Pine City 72, Chicago Lakes 68
What is great about playing tough competition is that you learn a lot about yourself and your own team. Chisago Lakes’ starting five might be one of the most talented lineups Pine City has seen all year; however the Dragons were able to pull off the victory 72 – 68 on Dec. 16.
“What a great win for our program. I am not sure the last time Pine City played Chisago Lakes from the old Rum River Conference days, but we are very excited to have them back on the schedule,” said coach Kyle Allen. “They are a very solid 3A school who brought some great competition to The Den and made for an exciting game and finish.”
Rebounding the basketball was not a strength for the Dragons in this game; Koleman Lind and Seth Logan led Pine City with eight each, however, as a team they only had a total of 29 on the game. The Dragons really protected the basketball on the offensive end and only committed seven turnovers. Pine City also took three charges in the game (Seth Logan, Kameron Jusczak, Caleb Fromm) which was huge for the Dragons on the defensive end.

12/12/19: @East Central

Pine City Pioneer

Boys basketball team takes 2 wins

Pine City 63, East Central 54
Pine City traveled to East Central for the Eagles home opener on Thursday, Dec. 12.
“I think East Central is the most improved team in the conference and it showed on Thursday,” said coach Allen “Coach Fogt is doing a great job there, he is coaching them hard and coaching them correctly.”
With more and more teams playing a similar style as Pine City, East Central hit six of their seven three-point shot. When things were not going the way they planned, Pine City responded as a veteran group of players and went back to what they do best... defense and rebounding. The Dragons attacked the boards with aggression on both ends.
“It felt like looking in a mirror. Loved when they ran our out of bounds play when we run in a circle; that was awesome! I think, generally speaking, we are seeing more and more teams play with a similar style to us. It really makes sense to do things that way, both from a numbers perspective and from a coaching perspective,” said coach Allen.
“We have been fortunate enough here at Pine City to have gained some recognition over the years for our style of play and I receive emails all the time from coaches from around the world who want to implement our system. We are gracious to be in the position and are more than willing to share with anyone looking to investigate.”
Pine City may have gave up 54 points to East Central; however, they were able to adjust to their hot shooting and still find a way to get it done on the defensive end. Koleman Lind totaled 25 points for Pine City and Seth Logan had a good night with 12 points. Kameron Jusczak really gave the Dragons lots of extra possessions by crashing the boards, ending with 11 total rebounds and 10 points.
Dylan Petersen came in and gave some good minutes off the bench, which gave Pine City a spark when they needed it.
“Overall, I thought our energy and effort were great, sometimes just misplaced. As we grow as a team, these things will be adjusted and fixed,” said coach Allen.

Alumni Speech

On Thursday before the East Central match up, Pine City graduate and member of the 1980 State team, Dan Blake, spoke to the team about their upcoming year.  The thoughts, wisdom, and message that was shared will be held onto as the team pushes through the 2019-20 season.
