One Dragon looks to Soar With Eagles
Pine City senior Noah Adams has committed to play at The University of Northwestern next year.
Noah leaves Pine City as the program's all time leading scorer while also racking up over 450 assists, 350 rebounds, and 275 steals.
A five year varsity player and 3 year captain, Adams is also a 4x All-Conference selection.
"Noah has been with me for five years, from day one" remembers Head Coach Kyle Allen. "He has been an outstanding and special player for more then one reason. His work ethic, dedication, and passion are second to none" continued Allen. "We have been tied together through good and bad throughout our careers at Pine City, I am excited to continue to follow his journey".
Adam's senior year was cut short by a torn ACL. He has already had surgery and is working towards being ready for the start of the 2016-17 college season which kicks off on October 15th.
Northwestern is in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. Within this conference sits both St. Scholastica (Coach Allen's Alma Mater) and Crown College (where former senior Kole Jusczak has committed to play next year) creating quite the Pine City connection in the basketball world.

2015-16: Year in Review
The Pine City Boys Basketball Varsity Team ended the year with a 16-11 overall record. They finished the year 4th in conference and with the #5 seed in the section (after losing the tiebreaker with Mora). The Dragons were defeated in the first round of playoffs at Mora 64-69.
As with the year previous, the non-conference schedule was again increased in terms of difficulty. Along with traveling to Cloquet for a Holiday Tournament where Pine City took on 4AAA St. Paul Central and 3AAA The Blake School, Pine City also traveled to 3AAA North Branch. Two teams from the ever-competitive Granite Ridge Conference in Milaca and Foley were also re-added to the schedule as PC was moved to section 6AA in the offseason. In comparison to last year’s varsity team that went 20-8, in one less game, the 2015-16 team scored 211 more points, had 111 more rebounds, 122 less turnovers, 53 more steals, 151 more assists, and shot 9% better from “2” and almost the same percentage from “3”.
The Varsity had some great highlights throughout the year, both individually and as a team. Senior Noah Adams became the program’s all time leading scorer finishing with 1,457 points on his shortened season. Noah is also deciding which college he would like to play basketball at next year following his ACL surgery. Fellow senior Kole Jusczak not only scored his 1,000 career point, but also became number two on the program’s all time scoring list finishing at 1,340 points. Kole was selected to the All-Tournament team at our holiday tournament and an All Sub-Section team member this year. He will be continuing his basketball career next year at Crown College.
The team averaged 76.4 points per game (6th best in 2AA) in the regular season and had a point differential of 14.6 points per game (17th best in 2AA). This year's varsity will also find themselves in the state record books. The 2015-16 team now holds the record for most 3’s made and attempted in a season across all levels. Other milestones include made 3’s in a game (21 - tied 2nd all time), 3’s attempted in a game (61 - tied 2nd all time), and points scored in one half (75 - 7th all time).
Stat leaders for the varsity this year were:
Points: Kole Jusczak (484)
Rebounds: Kole Jusczak (243)
Assists: Nathan Kleppe (145)
Steals: Noah Adams (71)
Charges Taken: Jake Rademacher (7)
Made 3’s: Clay Logan (72)
Free Throw %: Noah Adams (76%)
3 Point %: Clay Logan (39%)
The JV was young but a very scrappy bunch. What they lacked in size they made up for in grit. They went 18-5 on the season, while giving up 3 games on the season for the holiday tournament (2) and the game played at The Target Center. For the C-Squad, they pulled in an overall record of 9-8 outside of tournament play, picking up a big OT win over Mora and also defeating Braham at home.
At the Junior High level, our 8th grade went 8-4, winning 4 of their last 5 games. The 7th grade started a little slow, but ended the year 8-6 and took 2nd place at the annual conference tournament.
We ended the year with 65 participants with the program between the grades 7-12.
The overall program record for the 2015-16 season was 59-34 with all 5 levels having a winning record for the second straight year. This speaks to the work and effort that our coaches continue to put in on a daily basis for the betterment of the program and the players in the program. A huge thank you to Jason Rademacher, Wayne Hansmann, Monty Petersen, Austin Pavelka, and Mike O’Donnell.
A lot of the continued success continues to equate back to the increase in summer/offseason participation. Most of our athletes are 3 sport athletes at Pine City and continue to develop their overall athleticism. 30 basketball players participated in open gym last summer for a total of almost 1,200 hours. During the open gym, the Unified Athletic Program is offered where students 7-12 work on their overall athleticism. This program is also offered year round. The summer league record for C, JV, and V was a combined 54-15 while many teams participated in camps and tournaments.
At the youth level, we hosted youth camps at different times throughout the year from grades K-6 with over 100 participants. These camps were worked by our high school athletes who volunteer their time back to the program. This year, we had over 150 combined hours volunteered by our basketball players back to the program. We also had teams in the Great Northwest Basketball League participating in grades 3-7. The youth are also invited to be a “Junior Dragon” during varsity basketball games.
The group of seniors this year: Noah Adams, Kole Jusczak, Andy Clementson, and Sully Schimdt, are a special group for us. It has been fun to watch them come together over the years and really push each other. We have watched them grow as both basketball players as well as young men and leaders. We am very appreciative of their willingness to buy into our program and live the principles we preach.
One of the more thankless jobs goes to our managers: Erin Pavelka, Morganne Johnson, Taylor Kline, Sam Willert, Alyssa Olson, and Bailey Pulley. These six are continuously working and helping the program behind the scenes. They make a lot of the “extra” things that we do possible because of their willingness to always help out.
We are very appreciative of our increased crowds and following from both the student body and the community over the last few years; this year was no different. Your support, cheering, and presence does not go unnoticed by our program and players; thank you!
As we move forward as a program, the continued work put in by our former seniors is an evident part of our system. Every class has continued to leave their mark and help make the program better than when they found it. It is our expectation that those players coming up and returning will continue to out work the classes before them and set the great example of what it means to be a Dragon in our program!
