- By Heidi Burger
The Dragon Boys Varsity Basketball team attended the Christmas tournament in Cloquet, playing Mesabi East, Cloquet and East Central on Friday December 27. The boys started out strong but trailed toward the end of the tournament.

The boys came out “locked in” according to coach Kyle Allen. They did a great job of adjusting to the opponents game and many of the varsity guys got on the court to see play time. “The more guys that are contributing to help, the easier the job is,” said coach Allen. Senior Austin Wiener led the Dragons with rebounds, and sophomore Kevin McKellar came in off the bench to grab seven boards. The Dragons played a steady game and came away with the win.
AJ Ostenson put up 16 points and had 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals. Austin Wiener contributed 13 points, with 10 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. Charlie Ausmus contributed 8 points, with 1 rebound and 1 steal. Grant Larson had 7 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Kevin McKellar had 6 points, 7 rebounds, 1 steal. Grant Skluzacek had 4 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 steals. Sawyer McDaniel had 6 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals. Jace Peterson had 5 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals. Tanner Fix had 3 points and 3 rebounds. Eli Fromm had 2 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal. Dan Milliman had 2 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals. Sam Johnson had 2 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, and 1 steal.

For the second game of the tournament, the Dragons were up against the hosting team, Cloquet. Coach Allen said the Dragons have been attending this tournament for many years now, and they always play Cloquet for one game.
“It becomes kind of a good little fun game for us!” he said. The boys did a nice job in the first half, down by only a few points at halftime. Turnovers were few, and rebounds were sufficient in the first half. The second half started out well, but about 10 minutes into the second half, a few calls didn’t go the Dragons way, and it appeared to mess up their mental game.
“We just crumbled a bit under the mental toughness of the situation, and then the game kind of opened up and got out of hand,” reported Allen. Ostenson and Wiener led the team in the first half in stats, showing the skills they have worked on.
Ostenson contributed 18 points, with 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 block. Wiener put up 10 points, with 12 rebounds and 2 assists. McDaniel had 7 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Peterson had 6 points, 2 rebounds and 1 steal. Larson had 4 points, 1 rebound and 4 assists. Fromm had 4 points and 7 rebounds. McKellar had 2 points and 2 rebounds. Skluzacek had 3 points and 2 rebounds. Milliman had 2 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 steals. Ausmus had 2 points, 1 assist and 1 steal. Fix had 1 rebound and 1 steal. Colson Berglund had 2 rebounds. Kevon Williams had 1 rebound.
