2/27/19: Northern Pines Visit

Seth Logan -- 1,000 Point Club

On a shot inside the paint in the second half against Moose Lake-Willow River, junior Seth Logan reached his 1,000 career varsity point for Pine City.  Seth has scored all of those points under Coach Allen and is Coach Allen's 5th 1,000 point scorer.  Logan ended the night with 20 points.  The eruption from the Pine City faithful, family, and fans on the road was well earned by Logan.

2/26/19: @MLWR

Dragon boys win conference championship

Pine City 71, MLWR 53
Moose Lake/Willow River (MLWR) was ranked ahead of Pine City coming into the game hosted by MLWR on Tuesday, Feb. 26; however, the Dragons held MLWR to only 14 points in the first half and came home with the victory 71-53.
Seth Logan and Jake Adams led the Dragons with 20 points each. During the second half, junior Seth Logan reached the 1,000 career varsity point milestone as a Dragon. Logan has scored all his points under head coach Kyle Allen and is coach Allen’s fifth 1,000 point scorer. Koleman Lind also scored in double figures for the Dragons with 11 points.
“Our assist numbers were low, our steal numbers were low, but our number of turnovers was also low. We didn’t show as high as a percentage as we would have liked,” said coach Kyle Allen. “The numbers really say that our defense was on point, not in creating the turnovers that we usually like, but in the solid play that led to tough shots for them.”

2/22/19: Foley

Dragons show their dominance at home

By Lancelot E. Furber, Sports@pinecitymn.com, Pine City Pioneer

Pine City 87, Foley 59
Coming into this game, Pine City knew there was a lot on the line as they hosted Foley on Thursday, Feb. 22. Foley was right behind the Dragons for section seeding. Foley had a great group of seniors that had a lot of varsity experience playing together and can compete with most teams offensively.
The first half was a back and forth battle with neither team being able to pull away. Pine City had a nice run at the end of the first half, giving themselves an 11 point lead at half-time. The Dragons came out of the second half and continued to play hard to come away with the win 87-59.
Defensively, Pine City relied on Tanner Wicktor and Caleb Fromm to chase around Foley’s leading scorer all night and utilized the length of Seth Logan to guard their best outside shooter. Jake Adams and Christian Fromm led the Dragons in total rebounding with eight; Adams also had eight assists to go along with his team high 23 points.
“Duke Waxberg played some of his best varsity minutes to date and put together a few really nice stretches where he not only held his own but was positively contributing to the Dragons’ efforts,” said coach Kyle Allen. “A great thing to see as the end of the year approaches.”
The Pine City boys basketball team finishes off regular season play on the road, as they traveled to Moose Lake/Willow River on Tuesday, Feb. 26, and are heading to Hinckley/Finlayson on Friday, March 1.

2/20/19: Ogilvie

Dragons show their dominance at home

Pine City 88, Ogilvie 30
It was a little bit of a slow start offensively for the Dragons on Tuesday, Feb. 19 as they hosted Ogilvie; however, once things started clicking Pine City showed their domination with an 88 – 30 victory.
Pine City only had nine available players during the varsity game and all players had to spend time on the court. The lowest minute total of playing time was 13 minutes by freshman Kameron Jusczak, who also led the Dragons in rebounds with eight. Koleman Lind recorded his first double-double with ten assists and 17 points. Seth Logan had a great night offensively, going 9/9 from inside the arc (2-point range), 3 for 5 from three point shot range, and 4 for 4 from the free throw line, ending the night with an impressive 31 points. Jake Adams paced the Dragons defensively with six steals.

2/16/19: Crown @St. Scholastica

On Saturday, members of the Pine City Varsity team traveled to Duluth, MN to watch Crown College take on The College of St. Scholastica in a Men's Basketball game.  The game was extra special as two former Dragons took the floor for opposing teams.  Kole Jusczak (2016) is a starting junior for Crown College while Jake Rademacher (2018) is a freshman for St. Scholastica.

2/15/19: Braham

Both home and away, Pine City defeats rival Braham

Pine City 69, Braham 44
The next night, Friday, Feb. 15, the Dragons were back on their home court for their second match-up of the week against Braham. Pine City could not find their rhythm early in the first half, which led to a high Dragon foul count.
“The game itself was very choppy. We could never really get into a rhythm. Part of that was our own aggressiveness that led to the foul count,” said coach Allen. “We out-fouled Braham 22-7 in the game. But I was happy with how we continued to be aggressive and did not get frustrated in the process.”
Foul problems didn’t hinder the Dragons’ scoring capabilities as Pine City defeated Braham, for the second time this week, with a final score of 69-44.
On Friday, Feb. 22, the Dragons play their last season home game hosting Moose Lake/Willow River.
Varsity: W (69-44)
JV: W (72-38)
C-Squad: W (78-48)

Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer

Pine City and rival Braham come together for a purpose

Braham was generous enough to participate in Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer night with Pine City this year. It is an organization that raises funds and awareness for the research to help stop childhood cancers. Because of the makeup game, Pine City ended up playing Braham twice this past week.  Because of the circumstances, they were able to have the event both at Braham and at Pine City. At the game the teams had a free will donation that the crowd could participate in. All of the proceeds went to the Karly Irlbeck family. Karly is a senior at Pine City High School and was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma this fall. “I am so appreciative of our community and Braham for coming together for this purpose,” said coach Kyle Allen.

Both home and away, Pine City defeats rival Braham

Pine City 89, Onamia 29
On Thursday, Feb. 14, the Dragons were back on the road traveling to Onamia for their second of three conference games that week. While it was a close game early on, the Dragons were able to extend the lead to defeat Onamia 89-29. Pine City was able to limit their offensive turn-overs to under 10, which played a key role during this match-up.
