Dragon boys win first 2 rounds in playoffs
Pine City 75 , Milaca 62
Pine City Boys basketball took the court at home, on Thursday, March 5, in the first round of playoffs.
“Our section is so tough, there were times it was in question whether we were going to earn a first round home playoff game, and we only lost twice in the regular season,” said coach Kyle Allen. “I think in most sections, Milaca gets a home game first round; they are a good team with good team athleticism, shooting, and depth.”
Milaca really got off to a good start showing they came to play; however, the Dragons didn’t flinch and defeated Milaca 75-62.
“There is a certain amount of confidence that our seniors bring to the table,” said coach Allen. “I thought our rebounding and defensive execution needed some improvement at the start, and our boys responded, but they know what they need to do and how to do it. It is all about execution.”
The Dragons were down and regained the lead lost in the first half.
“We executed well at the end of the half offensively with a play call. I think that play on its own showcases our growth,” said coach Allen. “When we hosted Milaca earlier in the year, we were in the exact same situation, and we did not execute the play at the end of the first half.”
In the second half, Milaca put on a bit of a barrage made on the Dragons; however, Pine City was able to keep their cool and wits, make free throws, and hold on to win.
“In the second half, I made some mental mistakes, did some things that are uncharacteristic to what we do. It goes to show, everyone has to be constantly bought into the system, including me,” said coach Allen, “I put our guys in a bad position to succeed and they were able to overcome my mistakes.
“Our fans and band were great. We are such a better team with a great crowd behind us and we are so appreciative to all those who continue to support us,” said coach Allen.
