Boys basketball shoots past the competition
Pine City 64, Greenway 62
On Saturday, Jan. 11, the Dragons headed north to the Lake Superior Classic to face-off against Greenway. Knowing that Greenway would bring them some stiff competition, Pine City was excited to show off their program on this big stage. With neither team leading by more than eight points at any time in the game, Pine City takes home another win, 64-62.
With the game being tied 30-30 going into the second half, the game continued to be a seesaw battle through the final whistle.
“Give Greenway credit, they hit some big shots in the last few minutes to take the lead. We were put in a position where we had to not only get defensive stops, but also find a way to score,” said coach Allen. “We ended up finding our way to the free throw line and getting enough opportunities there to win the game while getting some stops on the defensive end.”
“Kameron Jusczak played amazing on the night, pulling down a game high 14 total rebounds. He was followed by Konnor Jusczak with seven. Pine City did a great job as a team of attacking the glass and had almost 50 total rebounds on the night.
“We brought out some old tricks in this game and put Caleb Fromm and Tanner Wicktor in our ‘tandem’ role on their best player,” said coach Allen. “They gave it everything they could and were able to hold him under his average per game.”
Duke Waxberg continues to fill up the stat sheet and ended with five points, six total rebounds, four assists, two steals. Koleman Lind hit some big shots in big moments in the second half as his teammates did a great job of setting him up and he delivered by knocking them down. Konnor Jusczak and Seth Logan both hit some key free throws, down the stretch, to help secure a Dragon victory.
