2/24/23: @Hinckley-Finlayson

Boys suffer tough loss to Hinckley-Finlayson

By Heidi Burger Pine City Pioneer

Hinckley-Finlayson 65, Pine City 63

The Dragon boys then went up to play Hinckley-Finlayson on Friday, Feb. 24. Hinckley came out ready to play and wanted the win. Our boys seemed to still be recovering from their previous game and couldn’t pull off the win. Although the Dragons fought hard at the end and brought the score to within two points, they fell short when the final buzzer sounded. The score was 63-65.

Seniors Luke Wilson, Riley Cummings and Lamont Sydney all took down a lot of rebounds and put up high points.

Coach Allen commented on the upcoming game against Esko saying, “They’re good, ranked #5 in the state. This will be a good task for us, and we are treating it like a play-off game.” The boys will play Esko at home at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, February 28 for their last season game.

2/21/23: Mora

Boys suffer tough loss to Hinckley-Finlayson

By Heidi Burger Pine City Pioneer

It was a tough week for the Dragon boys basketball team. The boys appeared to lose a bit of their edge and focus they’ve come so well to know. They started the week off playing Mora on Tuesday, February 21.

Mora 64, Pine City 51

“Mora is very good this year - they have size, skill, take care of the ball, and are well-coached,” said coach Kyle Allen. “We were down by a lot at the start of the game, and I give our guys credit for not going away.” The Dragons fought back the second half, but couldn’t catch up by the time the clock ran out. Senior Luke Wilson had a high score of 26 points. The final score was 51-64.

2/17/23: Spectrum

Boys basketball win two games in the week

By Heidi Burger Pine City Pioneer

The Dragon boys basketball team had a good week, winning both their games. They played Ogilvie away on Tuesday, February 14.

Senior Luke Wilson hit the first 3-pointer of the game with an assist from senior Lamont Sydney. Halfway through the first half, the Dragons found themselves down by about 5 points. They recomposed themselves, stuck to their game, and were able to get a lead going into halftime.

The second half started with the Dragons leading 30-24. The boys came out the second half ready to play, kept their lead and finished the game with a score of 71-51. Four of the Dragon players scored in the double digits, and Sydney and Riley Cummings were high rebounders with 11 each. Isaiah Hasz followed with 10.

The Dragon boys then hosted Spectrum on Friday, February 17. The Dragons were able to get a lead early in the game and maintain it throughout the game. The final score was 78-61. Both Wilson and Sydney scored over 20 points, while also having 9 rebounds.

The Dragon boys basketball team will play Mora at home Tuesday night, and then will travel to Hinckley on Feb. 23.
