Dragon Boys Basketball has strong week!

By Heidi Burger Pine City Pioneer

Pine City 62, Rush City 54

For the last home game, the boys hosted rival Rush City on Friday night. The boys were able to get and maintain a lead all through the first half, and went into halftime with a nine-point lead. However, half way through the second half, the Dragons found themselves down. They were able to find their grit, work hard and come back out on top and win the game 62-54. “The second half we called a time out, and we were able to really work our way back into the game by playing defense and rebounding the basketball and running on the transitions,” commented Coach Allen.

The Dragon boys will head to St. Francis for their last game of the regular season as they begin play-offs next week. The St. Francis’ game will be on Friday, March 2.

Dragon Boys Basketball has strong week!

By Heidi Burger Pine City Pioneer

Pine City 82, Mille Lacs 34

The game against Mille Lacs was a much different game, and the results were much more positive for the boys. “This was a big game and a large victory for us. Willert led us in assists. Willert and Blake both had five steals. Blake played phenomenal. He was in the right position and was doing all the things we asked him to do and getting rewarded for it,” said Allen. The boys transitioned well and capitalized on their momentum and brought the score to a large point difference by the end of the game. The final score was 82-34, with a Dragon win.

Dragon Boys Basketball has strong week!

By Heidi Burger Pine City Pioneer

The Dragon Varsity Boys Basketball team experienced more success this past week by winning two of their three games. They first hosted Milaca on Tuesday February 20. The Dragon boys then hosted Mille Lacs on Thursday.

Milaca 75, Pine City 57

“Milaca is a good team; they have good competition,” said coach Kyle Allen. “We struggled getting rebounds, and if we can’t get more than 30 rebounds in a game, it’s hard to get a win.” The Dragons were led in rebounds by Eli Fromm and Bryer Willert. The final score of the game was 75-57, with a Milaca win.

Dragon Boys bring in a win on Senior Night

By Andrew Burger Pine City Pioneer

The Dragon boys had one game this past week, and they took the win! The Dragons won 73-59 against Proctor on Friday night. It was also senior night, and the team only has one senior this year, Matthew Blake. Blake was celebrated by friends, teammates and family. It was a good game for the Dragons as they kept a ten-point lead most of the game.

The boy’s confidence was looking strong on the court, and the result was a win! Coach Allen commented on a few stand-out players, he said, “I thought Bryer played really well on both ends of the court. Eli and Charlie played well and with heart.” Blake had a stand out game and dominated the boards with 11 rebounds. Blake commented, “It is hard yet rewarding to be the only senior on the team. When we play well and get good rebounds, it is rewarding. I have enjoyed my senior year playing ball.”

Head coach, Kyle Allen, said the program got a win that night on all three levels, and he hopes the varsity team will continue to improve as they head into the end of the season, adding the stats all looked good.

“We were 14 and 2 in transition points, had more points on turnovers and second chance points, less turnovers. All these things lined up and equated to a win,” noted Allen. “We only had ten turnovers, and this was the first time we met the goal of ten or less. We also shot well on the freethrow line in the second half.”

He complimented his one senior, Matt Blake. “Matt came in on fire. I can’t say enough about him. He allowed us to do this year a little differently for the betterment of the program,” said Allen. “We have purposely gone slower this year and not as quick as we have in the past to get the juniors experience in varsity. Matt has been the epitome of a leader for this group. Last year we had some cracks in the foundation, and he took on that role to help fill those cracks, which doesn’t always show up on the stat sheet.”

Allen added that freshman Grant Larson had a nice game. “He got the ball in his hands a lot and was able to handle pressure,” noted Allen. “For a freshman to go out and do that is pretty impressive.”

Allen also praised Brooklyn Shelito as team manager. “This is her second year with us. She’s a great kid and always brings a positive attitude to the room. We have been lucky to have her,” he added.

Next year, added Allen, the team will have no grace period. “This is the grace period, and the expectation will be that they’ll go out and perform next year,” he concluded.

The boys have three home games this week. They play Milaca on Tuesday (no score available as of press time). Then they will play Mille Lacs on Thursday and will host Rush City on Friday, Feb. 23.

Volunteer Opportunity

Please see the message below.

If you send an email to Mrs. Mischler and myself signing up to help, I will count those hours towards your volunteer hours this year.

Thanks all-

-Coach

Good Afternoon,
Pine Dragons PTO is looking for help from students to set up for our annual Elementary Carnival on Friday, March 1st. We are in need of 10 or more volunteers to set up starting at 9:00 a.m. It typically takes 2-3 hours to set up, the more help we have the faster it goes.

We are reaching out to coaches and NHS leads to ask if you could send an email to your students to see if they would be willing to help us.

We will provide donuts the morning of for anyone who would be willing to help as an incentive to get them there in the morning.

Dragon Boys Basketball takes a win on the road

By Heidi Burger Pine City Pioneer

The boys basketball team was able to grab another win this past week against Lakes International Language Academy in Forest Lake.

Coach Kyle Allen commented on this being a new team for the Dragons to play, they first played them in summer league this past summer. “We were able to string things more together this game than we have been,” he said. “Great game play by both Austin Wiener and Matt Blake as they were our bottom guys on the defense side.”

Wiener also pulled down nine rebounds, the high for the Dragons. “We need this from him (Austin),” stated Allen, “with his size and what he brings to the table. He had a solid game.”

The game was a good game for the Dragon boys; they worked well together and the game looked smooth. They took the win, 73-62.

The boys then headed over the neighboring school to play the Braham Bombers on Thursday, February 1.

Allen felt the team competed a lot better this time around. The Dragons grabbed a few more rebounds, Wiener (9) and Sawyer McDaniel (8) as the 2 high numbers.

The Dragons made a good run in the second half; there was a solid group on the floor with a good rhythm. Although the boys had good things happen this game, the Bombers shot really well, and the Dragons struggled to get their shooting percentage up.

“Shooting will always be up and down,” Allen said. “We need to continue to focus on those foundational elements.” The Dragons fell to Braham, 71-52.

The boys have a busy week on the road, they traveled to Mora on Monday, February 5. The score was 86-50 with a Dragon loss. They will then head over to St. Cloud Apollo on Tuesday and will finish out the week in Ogilvie on Friday, Feb. 9.
