2/2/17: Hinckley-Finlayson

Varsity: L (84-70)
JV: L (52-50)
C-Squad: W (54-39)

By: Jesse Logan, Pine City Pioneer

Hinckley-Finlayson 84, Pine City 70

The Dragons knew this game would be a difficult one as the Jaguars are playing great basketball. Hinckley-Finlayson entered with a 15-2 record. The Jaguars had also just beaten Braham by 38 points while the Dragons had lost to the Bombers a week prior. Pine City had its chances, but were undone by sub-par shooting, poor shot selection, and a lack of focus inside against a bigger team.

The Dragons were led in scoring by Logan with 18 points. No other Dragon was in double figures.

“Hinckley is undefeated in conference and playing very good basketball,” said Coach Allen. “They are a talented team. They are the top team in Class AA in points scored, point differential, points given up, and in record. I was proud of how our boys came out and fought, but physically we weren’t able to do everything we wanted to. Hinckley has some gifted players and they were just a little too much for us.”

This loss to the Jaguars means that, barring some unforeseeable collapse, Hinckley-Finlayson will likely become the Great River Conference Champion. The Dragons followed this loss up with another home loss on Monday, Feb. 6 when they fell to Cloquet 77-71 despite a late rally. Full coverage in next weeks Pioneer.
